SEO – Is It As Important As It Once Was Or Is Social Media The Way to Go?
SEO (search engine optimization) is something I am continually trying to improve upon. I experiment with different approaches on both of my blogs to see what works and what doesn’t. It is a tedious process but something I am convinced I will someday master, or at least have fun trying. Sadly, I have been reading a little more and more from different blogs that SEO is not as vital to blog growth as it once was. The recent popularity of sites such as Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, MySpace (which is losing popularity to Twitter and Facebook), EzineArticles, eHow and other similar sites can do more for a blog’s popularity in several days then months of great SEO work. The “viral” nature of how stories and/or videos catch on is truly mind-blowing in many cases.
I will not give up on SEO tactics. Proper search engine optimization will provide long-term benefits. Submission of my posts to social bookmarking sites, the use of Twitter and writing for ezine type sites will help but will not replace tried and true practices. Why not use both equally? I read a good post called “15 Step by Step SEO Tips For Writing Blog Posts” which I feel incorporate good tips for both practices for the modern SEO approach.
The way most see it, these practices are one in the same. Submission of posts to social media sites of any kind can help with link building, an important SEO tactic however the post or article can become viral regardless of the SEO used. You cannot go wrong when you utilize the complete package!

Evernote – A Valuable Tool for Collecting Information
For the last month or so I have been using what I think is a “must have” for anyone gathering information on the Internet or anywhere else. Evernote is a FREE web-based tool that allows you to easily capture website screen shots, urls, texts, pics, tweets and anything else you find on the web for later reference. You can save the entire url or just a text portion of the web page and return to it later when you have more time to read it.
I use Evernote almost everyday, mainly as a way to save information I am gathering for my posts to this blog. Whenever I come across information that I want to return to at a later date, I “clip” it to my free account. You can tag your saved entries for easy retrieval and insert a note describing what it is. This is also a great tool for scanning business cards, receipts, pictures and documents.
The more I use it, the more I am impressed. I thought this was certainly something worth passing on. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Affiliate Marketing
I recently read a great series of posts this weekend on affiliate marketing and I thought this would be great to share. Affiliate marketing on my blog(s) is a new adventure for me, although I do have a successful affiliate business not related to the blog. There are a lot of people earning a nice living through the income they generate via their affiliate marketing business but there are many factors that must be taken into account. Darren Rowse has made a lot of money through his affiliate marketing campaigns so I take his advice seriously and maybe you will find the value in it as I do.

Plurk – A New Social Media Endeavor for Me
Recently I have been reading a lot of other blogs and have seen “Join me on Plurk” links more and more often. So in my quest to learn more on socializing myself and my brands, I clicked on one of the links. I found that Plurk is similar to Twitter and other social media sites but it does have some distinct differences. Below are a few that I have seen only in the one day since I joined.
- Plurks (posts) are displayed in a time-line across the top of your page
- Friends are people you follow and who follow you
- Fans are people that follow you but you don’t follow them
- Karma – you gain and lose Karma points based on activity, gaining and losing friends and fans and whether or not you “spam” your Plurks
The Karma feature is great because you can gain a lot of knowledge about a person you may be thinking of “Friending” just by seeing their Karma score.
I will continue to play around and let you know how it goes. Is this going to be the “New Twitter”? I don’t know but I do know that many people said that Twitter wouldn’t amount to much and we all know how that turned out! Nobody can safely predict which new social media outlet will catch on and which one will not.
Search Engine Optimization – SEO
If you are very new to blogging, you may have heard of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and not know what it is. In short, SEO are the steps you take in order to make your site more search engine friendly. This includes a variety of small things you should do when writing posts and/or pages. Below you will see some simple steps to begin with:
- Use keywords that are popular – check out Google’s Keyword Tool
- Use those keywords in your title and in your post but do not overdo it
- Link to some of your previous posts, if fitting
- Link to other blogs (this will help you to get link-backs which many say is most important)
- Install SEO plugins – they can do a lot for you in the back-round
As you get more familiar with SEO, you will begin to find and use more helpful tips. For now this is a good starting point and remember, CONTENT IS MOST IMPORTANT!
